I have a very soft spot for snowflakes. I just love how they are all different and I especially love when they fall at night, as if you catch them in the right light it looks like stars falling from the sky. There’s actually a lovely Japanese word for this called Yuki-akari, which translates to “snow-light.” It describes that beautiful, soft glow when snow catches the moonlight at night, truly magical.
So as we don’t get a lot of snow in the UK, I thought I would bring that snow-light inside to remind me of magical moments. Here’s a few ideas you might want to try.
1. Snowflake Bunting
Inspired by a very famous and popular “cold” named film, I decided to split the snowflakes on this bunting piece because I wanted to add a name to personalise it. If you want to keep the snowflake whole, you could easily just add one complete snowflake right in the middle of each flag instead.
2. Reusable Fabric Gift Bags
These have become very popular in recent years, and they are such a great idea because you can never have too many bags! They are simple and quick to make, don’t take much fabric, and can be made in various sizes. The great thing about a winter or Christmas themed bag is that once the gifting is over, it can be used for something else – like storing your holiday decorations, or you can re-gift it to someone else.
3. The Christmas Tree Skirt
The great thing about Christmas tree skirts is that they last a long time and only get used once a year. I think snowflakes make a pretty addition to any tree skirt. Even though real snowflakes are white in nature, when it comes to crafting there really are no rules! You can use any colour of felt to match your personal winter or Christmas theme.
4. Wall Art
I always use a wool-blend felt for my snowflakes, which can’t be washed, so wall art is a great way to decorate your home for the winter. You can choose a phrase, song, or just a mix of different snowflakes – just something that is meaningful and will make you smile when you look at it.
5. Wooden Plaque
The good thing about felt is that you can actually iron it onto many different surfaces, and wood is one of them! Ironing a snowflake directly onto a little wooden plaque adds a lovely texture to the wood and makes the snowflake design stand out beautifully. You can paint “Let It Snow” on the plaque to complete the rustic look and even add a little bit of glitter for that extra sparkle.
Finding the Magic
There’s something really satisfying about creating your own seasonal touches to bring that magical winter feeling into your own home. It really brightens up those long, darker evenings and fills the house with comfort. It really is the perfect time of year to grab yourself a hot drink, get cosy and create something beautiful. (And yes, even though we’re in the middle of a heatwave whilst I write this, I can’t seem to get Let it Snow out of my head!)
